85 countries have “experimented” with decentralization

The Executive Director of Kosovo Local Government Institute, Besnik Tahiri, stated that 85 countries around the world have experimented with decentralization while at the same time recommending to the Government of Jordan to begin this process.

Mr. Tahiri said that before going through the decentralization process of local government, a strategy should be developed for all the problems of local government, starting from the effective administration to employment.

“In the meeting with the Minister of Municipal Affairs in Jordan, Mr. Walid Al-Masri, it was discussed on decentralization in the Kingdom of Jordan after the adoption of two major decentralization laws in the Jordanian parliament; the municipal law and the decentralized government law.

During the meeting, it was emphasized that 85 countries have experimented with decentralization and I recommenced the Jordanian government to develop a roadmap for implementing sustainable and effective decentralization.

This strategic and practical document would be cross-sectoral and it would address the topics of better services, a more effective administration, economic development, employment and local democracy. Furthermore, during the meeting, it was also discussed about the need for building and developing capacities at the sub-national level (regions and municipalities).”
